Global Experiences
Spanish Language Learning
Studying Spanish at the University of Florida has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my undergraduate journey. At times, grasping the intricacies of the language felt overwhelming, especially when tackling complex grammar rules like the subjunctive and conditional tenses. These tenses, with their subtle distinctions and varied uses, were difficult to master and often left me feeling frustrated. However, I was constantly inspired by the idea that fluency would allow me to connect with others in their native language. Along the way, I realized that learning a language is much more than just memorizing vocabulary—it is a gateway to understanding culture, history, and identity.
One of the greatest joys of speaking Spanish has been the opportunity to connect with patients and their families during my time volunteering at the hospital. I take delight in having conversations, where I can ask about food recommendations, share cultural experiences, and engage in meaningful exchanges. One memorable recommendation was congri, a Cuban dish of rice and black beans. These moments allow me to build trust and rapport with those I serve, all while expanding my own understanding of their worldviews and traditions. It’s a privilege to use my language skills to foster connection, making people feel seen and heard, which has further deepened my passion for language learning and cultural exchange.
One of the most impactful courses I took was Civilization and Colonization of Spanish America, where I explored the richness of Spanish-speaking cultures through literature and art. From Frida Kahlo’s introspective paintings to the powerful words of José Martí and Gabriel García Márquez, I gained a deeper appreciation for the struggles and triumphs that have shaped Latin America. Works like Nuestra América and the legacy of historical figures such as Túpac Amaru showed me how art and literature serve as testaments to resilience, revolution, and identity. This experience reinforced my passion for language learning—not just as a means of communication, but as a bridge to understanding people and their stories on a deeper level.
Through this process, my love for languages expanded beyond Spanish. Inspired by the connections I made between language and culture, I became eager to learn Arabic. I was fortunate enough to have an Arabic tutor who also knew Spanish, and he began teaching me Arabic through the lens of Spanish, combining my two language learning journeys. He shared a fun fact that there are many Spanish-to-Arabic language connections, such as arroz (rice) and ojalá (hopefully), which deepened my understanding of how intertwined languages can be. This experience not only accelerated my learning but also opened my eyes to how languages can bridge cultural and historical gaps, offering me new insights into diverse perspectives.
Global Gators Passport
Through Global Gators Passport, I had the opportunity to guide and mentor an international student throughout her time at the University of Florida. The program randomly paired me with a Vietnamese student, which proved to be an incredibly meaningful connection due to our shared cultural background. Having grown up in an immigrant household, I could relate to her experiences and challenges as she navigated life in the U.S.
During our time together, I helped her navigate a significant transition in her academic journey—from biomedical engineering to pre-dental microbiology. This change was daunting, but I was able to offer guidance and support, helping her explore different academic paths and understand the resources available to her. We spent time together outside of the academic setting, going out to eat at local restaurants and showing her around campus to help her feel more at home. I also drove her to her version of Preview, an orientation for international students, helping her feel more confident as she began her journey at UF.
As time went on, I had the privilege of witnessing her growth not just academically, but socially as well. One of the most rewarding moments was seeing her actively involved in UF’s Vietnamese Student Organization (VSO). She performed a traditional fan dance on stage, something that showcased both her cultural pride and newfound confidence in engaging with the UF community. Watching her shine on stage reminded me of how far she had come and how important it is to provide support during such transitional times.
Not only did I feel like I was helping her, but she was also helping me. Her young energy and enthusiasm were contagious, and I found myself feeling more motivated and inspired. Her passion for getting involved and embracing new experiences pushed me to be more proactive in my own journey, and it reminded me how much we can learn from those around us. It was truly fulfilling to see her embrace opportunities and grow both inside and outside the classroom.
Through this experience, I learned the value of mentorship—how even small moments of guidance can make a big difference in someone’s journey. It was a reminder that helping others, especially those from similar backgrounds, can build bridges and create lasting bonds.
English Learning Institute
Through my involvement with the English Learning Institute, I had the privilege of helping a man from Saudi Arabia practice his English. We met weekly at the local Panera, and our conversations were always enlightening, covering a wide range of topics. One of the most fascinating discussions we had was about racing horses in Saudi Arabia, where he shared how individuals can spend between $60,000 and $100,000 on a single horse.
While these meetings were enriching, they were also challenging. English was not his first language, and at times we struggled to communicate clearly. We often had to rely on translation apps like Google Translate to bridge the language gap. Despite these hurdles, we managed to connect through pictures and stories about our lives. These images became a powerful tool to overcome language barriers, allowing us to share experiences and understand each other better.
These meetings were more than just language practice—they became a cross-cultural exchange where we both learned from each other. As I helped him improve his English, I was introduced to unique perspectives about Saudi culture, customs, and traditions. This experience not only strengthened my understanding of language, but also deepened my appreciation for the diverse backgrounds that make up our global community. It was a reminder that language learning goes beyond words—it's about connecting, sharing stories, and broadening one's horizons.
Study Abroad in Cusco, Peru
My study abroad experience in Peru was transformative, offering me not just an academic perspective, but a deep connection to the culture and language. Living in a foreign country immersed me in a world that was very different from my own, and it was through this immersion that I truly began to grow. As I navigated the streets of Cusco, communicated with locals in Spanish, and adapted to daily life, I realized how much more I could learn when I stepped outside my comfort zone.
One of the most impactful aspects of my experience was living with my host family, Jacqui and Guido. They welcomed me with open arms and became an integral part of my journey. The parents, Jacqui and Guido, served us traditional Peruvian dishes, always accompanied by one of the country’s staple sides: papas (potatoes). Their warmth and generosity made me feel like part of their family, and through our daily conversations, I learned not only the complexities of the Spanish language but also the depth of Peruvian traditions and values. We would often talk about all things Peru, such as visits to the Mercado Central de San Pedro, where the vibrant colors and scents of the market showcased the country’s rich culture. They would also tell me about the festivals they participated in, such as Inti Raymi, a celebration of the winter solstice and Inca heritage that takes place in Cusco. These conversations opened my eyes to the importance of family bonds, traditions, and their deep-rooted connection to the land and history of Peru.
This experience strengthened my language skills in ways I could not have achieved in a classroom. Beyond vocabulary and grammar, I was able to engage in authentic conversations, experiencing the subtleties of the language and gaining a deeper understanding of how words shape culture. Living with Jacqui and Guido deepened my appreciation for the richness of Peruvian culture and allowed me to build relationships that continue to inspire me. It was a reminder that true growth comes not just from learning, but from connecting with others on a human level.
An unexpected highlight of my experience was participating in Quechua learning workshops, where I gained insight into the language and its cultural impact during colonization. Through these workshops, I learned about the historical significance of Quechua-speaking individuals and their resilience. I was also able to explore the healthcare system in Peru, including the concept of "seguro" (insurance), which was essential for understanding access to medical care. In my time at the clinic, I had the unique opportunity to meet Quechua-speaking patients, and I was able to greet them with "Allin puncha" (Good morning), which made the experience even more meaningful and memorable. These interactions connected me with the indigenous culture of Peru and gave me a deeper appreciation for their rich history and heritage.
